The Legalized Child Marriage Laws in he US

Being a country of freedom, you would never think that the US would be home to Legalized Child Marriage. With the law system the US has, it’s not that much of a surprise, is it? It is twisted to think that people would want to secure a marriage with a child as young as 10 years old. It is way more commonplace as you would think, since it is estimated at about 200,000 children are forced into adult marriage in the US that has been allowed on a yearly basis. It is also possible there could be a much higher number, who knows if the stats are accurate?

The Independent has said:

“At least 207,468 minors married in the US between 2000 and 2015, according to data compiled by Unchained At Last, a group campaigning to abolish child marriage, and investigative documentary series Frontline.”

So many children have their lives ruined and forced into marriage due to legal exceptions with the age of consent being 18. Whether it is through pregnancy or the approval from their parents. This shocking problem has been given the spotlight recently since Chris Christie (the governor of New Jersey) made a statement about his refusal to change the legal standing against these kinds of marriage arrangements.

“I agree that protecting the well-being, dignity, and freedom of minors is vital,” Christie attempted to justify, “but the severe bar this bill creates is not necessary to address the concerns voiced by the bill’s proponents and does not comport with the sensibilities and, in some cases, the religious customs, of the people of this State.”
